Frequently asked questions
In case you are still doubting...
How are your classes structured?
The first half of each session begins with casual conversation and catching up. I'll then address any questions from your homework or self-study practice. In the second half, we dive into structured materials, whether using my custom content or resources you'd like to explore together. Though of course, this structure is completely flexible. We can adjust the format, timing, or focus areas to match your specific learning goals and preferences.
What materials do you use?
I create topic-based materials of varying difficulties that introduce useful vocabulary and expressions, then guide you through targeted questions about the topic to help reinforce and practice what you've just learned. However, using materials is completely optional. You are more than welcome to bring your own material and content to the class, or let our conversation flow without any materials. (side note: material topic suggestions are always welcomed)
How personalised is it?
I tailor to your learning needs because that's what one-on-one teaching is all about. We will work on your specific objectives, pronunciations that are challenging for you, concepts that you feel stuck in, and conversation topics that are relevant to you. You will be given homework that targets your weaknesses. I'll also speak to you in Cantonese according to your level, challenging enough to stretch your abilities, but not so difficult that you feel overwhelmed. This sweet spot ensures you build both skill and confidence in every single session, making visible progress that keeps you motivated.
What sets you apart from other Cantonese tutors?
I have been on both sides of the table (or screen, in this context). As someone who teaches Cantonese 30+ hours weekly while spending 3+ hours learning with my own tutors, I have walked the language learning journey myself. I achieved conversational fluency in Spanish within a year and am currently tackling Japanese. My roles as both teacher and student gives me insights on which methods actually work because I use them myself. When you work with me, you're not just getting a Cantonese tutor, you're getting help someone who walks the same path you're on every single day.
How much should I commit?
Most students have 1 to 2 sessions with my per week for accountability and progress tracking. I also offer package discounts!
